LET THE GAMES BEGIN- 2014 ALBERTA WINTER GAMES JUST DAYS AWAY!

The 2014 Alberta Winter Games are just days away!

The Games will kick-off with one of the largest outdoor celebrations the Bow Valley has ever seen. The 2014 Alberta Winter Games Opening Ceremony takes place Thursday February 6, 6:30 to 8:30 pm in downtown Banff.

Before an audience of over 2,500 athletes, coaches, officials and spectators, the ceremony will include entertainment by headline performer Calgary recording artist, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald, Stoney Nakoda dancers, Juggler Paul Isaak, Green Fools Theatre and Canmore’s ,Alysse and Joe Ernewein.

The ceremony will culminate in the lighting of the 2014 Alberta Winter Games ATCO cauldron by a young Bow Valley torch runner, after which Premier Alison Redford will officially declare the Games open.

The 2014 Alberta Winter Games run from February 6-9th young athletes from eight zones will participate in 22 sporting competitions in both locations. The Alberta Winter Games give athletes aged 11 to 17 the opportunity to participate in a multi-sport environment, much like the Olympics. For many of the selected athletes this will be their first taste of provincial level competition.

The 2014 Alberta Winter Games is the largest event to be held jointly by the two communities of Banff and Canmore and certainly one of the legacies of these games is this new relationship in the spirit of sport and co-operation.

Spectators are encouraged to use public transit and to dress for winter weather. Information on parking and road closures will be posted on banff.ca. Public transit information can be found on the AWG site www.2014awg.ca.
