Sport Competition Package

 

The 2012 Alberta Winter Games will be held in the Stony Plain

Dates: February 9-12, 2012

Venue:  Stony Plain Memorial School

Age Group:  11-17 years of age (for athletes born in 1995 or later)

Zone Team Composition:  The maximum team size shall be:

  • 8 competitors (4 male and 4 female) per zone
  • 2 coaches or chaperones per zone ( one female and one male)

Fill Policy:  The sport fill policy will allow the zone with the greatest number of participants during their respective zone playoff to be given the first opportunity to fill any remaining vacant positions according to the ranking at their zone playoffs. If this zone is not able to fill the position(s), then the opportunity will be given to the zone with the next highest participation. 

Note: Individual fill athletes will compete in both the team and individual event for the zone they are filling on regardless of their home zone.

Eligibility:  All competitors and coaches must be members in good standing of Badminton Alberta.

  • Athletes will be ineligible if they have represented Canada in the team event at either World Junior or PanAm Junior competitions.
  • Coaches – All staff registered as coaches must be fully certified (Part A, technical, and practical) under the National Coaching Certification Program to at least Level 1 Badminton.

  • All coaches and managers (chaperones) must be at least eighteen (18) years old by the start of the Albert Winter Games.

Affiliation:  Athletes and coaches must be COMPETITIVE members of Badminton Alberta and have paid the appropriate membership fee prior to the commencement of the Games competition. 

Provincial Games Registration Fee and Deadline:  All zone team competitors who qualify to compete at the 2012 Alberta Winter Games (excluding coaches and chaperones), are required to pay an individual registration fee of $40.00. This fee will go towards offsetting the costs related to transportation, accommodation, meals, zone identification, medals, athlete entertainment and sport competitions. This fee must accompany the athlete’s registration form for the Provincial Games.

Event(s): The badminton competition will feature a team event played in the morning session of each day and an individual event component to be played during the afternoon play sessions.

  • Team Competition - Consisting of nine (9) matches ( 2 boy's singles, 2 girl's singles, 2 boys doubles, 2 girls doubles, 1 mixed doubles). Teams will be seeded according to the final standing of the 2010 Alberta Winter Games team event. Series dropdown format guarantees each team will play in three team matches. Final placement order 1 to 8 will be established.
  • Individual Competition - Five event draws will be contested, one each of boys singles, girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles. Events governed by World Badminton Federation rules.

Protest Proceures

  • All protests during the course of the tournament must be brought immediately to the attention of the Tournament Referee.
  • If the Tournament Referee feels it is necessary, he/she has the right to summon the Protest Committee to decide on any protests.
  • The Protest Committee will consisst   of the Tournament Referee, Provincial Sport Coordinator and Host Community Sport Chair.
  • All decisions by the Tournament Referee or Protest Committee are final.

Equipment Specifications: Feathered shuttles will be used in all events at the Alberta Games.

Entry and Zone Playoff Procedures

The zone selection process to be determined by each zone must be approved by the Provincial Sport Coordinator. Selection process will be determined by:

  • Size of draw
  • Playing time available and must consist of singles with doubles and/or mixed doubles as optional events.

Competitors may particiapte in any 2 of 3 events.

Once selected at the zone playoff, Badminton Alberta recommends that athletes attend one (1) of the following events before participating in the Alberta Games:

  • Sport Outreach Clinic
  • Sport Outreach Summer Camp
  • Compete regularly in sanctioned Badminton Alberta tournaments.
