Team Alberta athletes excel at Canadian Junior Nationals

Team Alberta athletes captured a total of 31 medals at the 2014 Yonex Canadian u23 & Junior Badminton Championships held April 28-May 3 at ClearOne Badminton Centre in Richmond, BC. The breakdown of the medal count is: 8 gold, 7 silver and 16 bronze. The breakdown by age groups is: 6 medals in u14, 9 medals in u16, 9 medals in u19 and 6 medals in u23.

Kevin Lee of The Glencoe Club earned triple crown in u16, winning boy's singles, boys doubles with clubmate Byron Holcek and mixed doubles with Jenna Wong of BC.

Meanwhile Kyleigh O'Donoghue of The Glencoe Club captured two gold and one silver medal in the u19 category. O'Donoghue defeated the top seed Brittany Tam in girls singles, teamed with Duncan Yao of BC to win mixed doubles, but had to settle for silver in girls doubles, alongside Joanne Chen of Ontario.

Takeisha Wang of the Royal Glenora Club captured Alberta's only other gold medal in u19 girls doubles, teamed with Michelle Tong of Ontario. Wang also earned a silver medal in u19 mixed doubles paired with Ty Lindeman and settled for bronze in u19 girls singles.
