The 41st. annual YONEX ALBERTA SERIES continues with the third of four proposed tournaments being held March 31-April 2, 2023 at NAIT in Edmonton. Each tournament will feature an OPEN category, leading to waterfall in B, C, D, should the entry size warrant such.

#4 Alberta Championships, TBA, Calgary: April 28 - 30, 2023


FORMAT – Series waterfall format will be used. Everyone will start in A, with first round losers dropping to ‘C’ category. Second round losers in ‘A’ will drop to ‘B’ category. First round losers in ‘C’ category will drop to ‘D’ category. Everyone is guaranteed three matches per event.

ENTRY FEES – 1 event - $80.00 per player; 2 or more events - $95.00 per player. All fees include feather shuttles & 5% GST. Badminton Alberta has been issued a Goods and Services Tax business number (12647 3495). Each participant will receive one souvenir item, regardless of the number of tournaments entered. On-line payment must be made at the time of registration. Badminton Alberta is set-up to receive payment through PayPal. Entries received without payment will be deleted. It is the responsibility of each player to ensure payment has been received by the registration deadline.

ENTRY DEADLINE – entries are due no later than 6:00 pm MST (midnight GMT) at least ten (10) days prior to the start date of the tournament. Timed draws will be post on www.badmintonalberta.ca by 1:00 PM on the Wednesday prior to the tournament. Late entries will not be accepted by the On-line registration system or through the office.

ELIGIBILITY- All participants must be affiliated individually as a member with Badminton Alberta or be a member in good standing with another provincial badminton association and hold a valid PROVINCIAL PLAYERS LICENSE with Badminton Alberta or their respective member association. Badminton Alberta membership and PROVINCIAL player license will be verified at the time of On-line registration and available if required.

EVENTS - Players may enter a maximum of three events, one singles, one doubles and one mixed double. 

AWARDS – A maximum of $27,500 in prize money will be paid, with each tournament featuring a minimum of $2,500.00 in prize money payable to the winners, finalists and semi-finalists of the ‘A’ events. As the total participant entry for each tournament increases, so does the value of prize money.

The prize money will initially be split evenly among the five disciplines, with a sliding scale being implemented to encourage a strong entry. Out of province players are welcome and encouraged to enter the first three events. All participants in the ‘A’ division, regardless of province are eligible for prize payout.

YONEX POINTS – Winners and finalists in the ‘B’ and ‘C’ other sponsor merchandise credits will be awarded to the winner and finalist in each of the B & C divisions of each tournament. Credit holders can purchase sponsor merchandise once they have enough credits. Players will be able to purchase what they want, when they want or save up for something substantial like a new racquet. Athletes may not earn product points and prize money in the same event. When the size of draws permit the opportunity, athletes will receive prize money and the corresponding product points will be unclaimed.

SCHEDULE – Play commences at: Friday 5:00 PM – singles; Saturday 9:00 AM – men’s and women’s doubles; Saturday 2 PM – mixed doubles; Sunday 9:00 AM - all finals if required. Schedule is subject to change, based on size of entry and availability of courts.

SHUTTLES – YONEX feather shuttles supplied for all matches. Quantity of shuttles may be limited if abnormal use is experienced.

SERIES RANKINGS – Continued for 2022-23 YONEX Alberta Series ranking point standings will be calculated and post following event tournament. These rankings will be maintained separately for singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The final YONEX Alberta Series Rankings will be based on an athlete’s best four results from the YONEX Alberta Series tournaments, including the Alberta Championships.

CLOTHING - "Coloured clothing" rule in effect at all venues, unless otherwise specified. Badminton Alberta encourages the use of protective eyewear.

REFEREE & DRAW MASTER– Badminton Alberta staff or assigned volunteer (403) 297-2722. Draw times available at 1:00 PM the Wednesday prior to the tournament

TOURNAMENT RULES:

The 60-second interval is allowed during each game once one side reaches 11 points, but no coaching will be allowed.

Prior to the semi-finals, the 120-second interval between the 1st and 2nd games will be permitted without coaching support. During the semi-finals and finals, coaching during the 120-second interval will be allowed.

The 120-second interval between the 2nd and 3rd games will be allowed in all rounds and will permit coaching support.

Note: Badminton Alberta has decided that no player will be allowed to leave the court during any of these intervals.  Sufficient water and extra racquets should be with the player on court at the start of the match.

PHOTOS - Badminton Alberta, its representative and successors reserve all rights to reproduce, for the purpose of illustration, fund raising, advertising or publication in any manner, any photographs taken by Badminton Alberta or affiliated members, clubs, contractors or staff during this event.

Continued for 2022.23 is the requirement to submit an on-line WAIVER prior to each tournament. The content of the WAIVER is the same material that you have agreed to while completing the tournament registration process - we just require an adult or guardian to provide a signature agreeing to the terms and conditions.

WAIVER OF RIGHTS AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF POLICIES
-You understand and agree to the following: You are participating at your own choice and, intending to be legally bound, you hereby acknowledge and agree to assume all risk of injury and loss of any kind whatsoever in participating in this event.
-You agree that you shall be solely responsible for all claims, demands, damages, costs, expenses, actions, causes of action, whether in law or in equity, resulting from any loss, personal injury, or property damage, or for the loss or theft of any property, however caused, as a result of, relating to or arising from your participation in this event.
-You hereby indemnify and save harmless Badminton Alberta and its members, agents, and/or representatives and its successors and assigns from and against all liability whatsoever resulting from any loss, personal injury, property damage, loss or theft referred to in the preceding paragraph.
-You hereby waive, release and forever discharge Badminton Alberta and its members, agents, and/or representatives and its successors and assigns, to the fullest extent permitted by law, from any and all claims, actions, causes of action, liabilities, obligations, damages, omissions or costs as a result of, relating to or arising from your participation in this event.
-You acknowledge that you have fully read and understand the Policies put forth by Badminton Alberta on the Badminton Alberta website and agree to abide by any rules and regulations outlined therein from the time of online entry until the completion of the event.
-You agree that this release and waiver of liability shall be binding upon you and your heirs, executors, administrators and assigns.
-You and your parent/guardian (if the athlete in under 18 years of age) confirm that you have reviewed the approved Concussion Awareness Resources within the last 12 months. These resources are available at www. badmintonalberta.ca

HOST HOTEL – A special rate at for use by Badminton Alberta members on selected tournament weekends.

WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDS:
• Refunds are provided to participants, less the 25% administration fee, who withdraw before the competition registration deadline.
• After the registration deadline, but before the draws are made, refunds are provided for the administration fee of 50%.
• Refunds will not be provided for withdrawals after draws have been made.
• No refund will be given to those who do not provide proof of vaccination, or a negative antigen test result no later than 72 hours before the start of the competition.

CONSENT TO USE PERSONAL INFORMATION The Holder (and the Registrant's parent/guardian, if applicable) authorizes the Club, the Member and Badminton Alberta (collectively the "Organization") to collect and use Personal Information about the Registrant in order to receive communications and for the purposes described in each organization's privacy policies.

PHOTO
The Participant (and the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) grants permission to the Organization to photograph and/or record the Participant's image and/or voice on still or motion picture film and/or audio tape, and to use this material to promote the sport, the Organization, and/or the Organization's Activities through social media, newsletters, websites, television, film, radio, print and/or displays. The Participant (or the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) understands that they waive any claim to remuneration for use of audio/visual materials used for these purposes. Permission may be withdrawn at any time by contacting either Organization's Privacy Officer. The Privacy Officer will advise the implications of such withdrawal.

PHOTO
The owner (and his/her parent/guardian, if applicable) authorizes the organization to photograph and/or record his/her image and/or voice on a fixed or cinematographic film and/or audio tape, and to use this material to promote the sport, organization and/or activities of the organization through social media, newsletters, websites, television, films, radio, print media and/or exhibitions. The Holder (or the Parent/Guardian of the Holder, if applicable) understands that he/she waives any claim for remuneration for the use of audio/visual material used for these purposes. Permission may be withdrawn at any time by contacting the privacy officer of either organization. The Privacy Officer will inform you of the consequences of such a withdrawal.

ASSUMPTION OF RISK
1. The Participant is voluntarily participating in the sport of badminton and the spectating, orientation, instruction, activities, competitions, programs, and services (collectively the "Activities") of Badminton Alberta, and the NAIT. These organizations and their respective Directors, Officers, committee members, members, employees, coaches, volunteers, officials, participants, agents, sponsors, owners/operators of the facilities in which the Activities take place, and representatives (collectively the "Organization") are not responsible for any injury, personal injury, damage, property damage, expense, loss of income or loss of any kind suffered by a Participant during or as a result of the Activities and/or, when the Participant is the age of majority or older, when caused by the negligence of the Organization.
 

RISKS
The Activities have foreseeable and unforeseeable inherent risks, hazards and dangers that no amount of care, caution or expertise can eliminate, including without limitation, the potential for serious bodily injury, permanent disability, paralysis, and loss of life. These risks include:
(a) Executing strenuous and demanding physical techniques;
(b) Vigorous physical exertion, strenuous cardiovascular workouts and rapid movements;
(c) Exerting and stretching various muscle groups;
(d) The failure to properly use any piece of equipment or from the mechanical failure of any piece of equipment;
(e) Spinal cord injuries which may render the Participant permanently paralyzed;
(f) Serious injury to virtually all bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons and other aspects of the Participant's body or to the Participant's general health and well-being;
(g) Abrasions, sprains, strains, fractures, or dislocations;
(h) Concussion or other head injuries, including but not limited to, closed head injury or blunt head trauma;
(i) Physical contact with other participants, spectators, equipment, and hazards;
(j) Contact with a racquet, shuttlecock, net, or the court;
(k) Not wearing appropriate safety or protective equipment;
(l) Failure to act safely or within the Participant's own ability or within designated areas;
m) Travel to and from competitive events and associated non-competitive events which are an integral part of the Activities.
3. The Organization may offer or promote online programming (such as webinars, remote conferences, workshops, and online training) which have different foreseeable and unforeseeable risks than in-person programming.
These risks include privacy breaches, hacking, technology malfunction or damage.
4. The novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has been declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization and COVID-19 is extremely
contagious. The Organization has put in place preventative measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19; however, the Organization cannot guarantee that the Participant will not become infected with COVID-19. Further, participating in the Activities could increase the Participant's risk of contracting COVID-19 or any other contagious disease.
5. The Organization may be negligent, which may include failure by the Organization to take reasonable steps to safeguard or protect the Participant from the risks, dangers and hazards associated with participation in the Activities.

TERMS
6. In consideration of the Organization allowing the Participant to participate in the Activities, the Participant agrees:
a) That the Participant is not relying on any oral or written statements made by the Organization or their agents, whether in a brochure or advertisement or in individual conversations, to agree to participate in the Activities;
(b) That when the Participant practices or trains in their own space, the Participant (or the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) is responsible for the Participant's surroundings and the location and equipment that is selected for the Participant;
(c) That the Participant's mental and physical condition is appropriate to participate in the Activities and the Participant (or the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) assumes all risks related to the Participant's mental and physical condition;
(d) To comply with the rules and regulations for participation in the Activities;
(e) To comply with the rules of the facility or equipment;
(f) That if the Participant observes an unusual significant hazard or risk, the Participant will remove themselves from participation and immediately bring their observations to a representative of the Organization;
(g) The risks associated with the Activities are increased when the Participant is impaired and the Participant will not participate if impaired in any way;
h) That it is the Participant's (or the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) sole responsibility to assess whether any Activities are too difficult for the Participant. By the Participant commencing an Activity, the Participant (or the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) acknowledges and accepts the suitability and conditions of the Activity;
(i) That COVID-19 is contagious in nature and the Participant may be exposed to, or infected by, COVID-19 and such exposure may result in personal injury, illness, permanent disability, or death; and
j) That the Participant (or the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) is responsible for choosing the Participant's safety or protective equipment and the secure fitting of that equipment.

DISCLAIMER
7. When the Participant is the age of majority or older, the Participant assumes all risks arising out of, associated with or related to, participation in the Activities and waives any and all claims that the Participant may have now or in the future against the Organization. The Participant, when the age of majority or older, accepts and fully assumes all such risks and possibility of personal injury, death, property damage, expense and related loss, including loss of income, resulting from participation in the Activities.
8. When the Participant is the age of majority or older, the Participant forever releases and indemnifies the Organization from any and all liability for any and all claims, demands, actions, damages (including direct, indirect, special and/or consequential), losses, actions, judgments, and costs (including legal fees) (collectively, the "Claims") which the Participant has or may have in the
future, that might arise out of, result from, or relate to, participation in the Activities, even though such Claims may have been caused by any manner whatsoever, including but not limited to, the Organization's negligence, gross negligence, negligent rescue, omissions, carelessness, breach of contract and/or breach of any statutory duty of care of the Organization.
9. The Organization is not responsible or liable for any damage to the Participant's vehicle, property, or equipment that may occur as a result of the Activities. This Agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as is permitted by law of the Province of Alberta and if any portion thereof is held invalid, the balance shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal force and effect. The Participant (or the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) agrees to file any lawsuit against the Organization in the Province of Alberta and further agrees that the substantive law of the Province of Alberta will apply with regard to conflict of law rules.

ACCEPTANCE OF RISK
1. The participant voluntarily practices badminton and participates in the activities, competitions, programs and services of Badminton Canada (collectively the "Activities"), Badminton Canada, Badminton Alberta and the NAIT. These organizations and their directors, directors, committee members, members, employees, coaches, volunteers, officials, participants, agents, sponsors, owners/operators of the facilities in which the activities take place, and its respective representatives (collectively "the organization") are not responsible for any injury, property damage, expenses, loss of income or losses of any kind suffered by a participant during or as a result of the activities. and/or, where the participant is of legal age or older, when they are caused by the negligence of the organization.

RISKS
The activities involve foreseeable and unpredictable inherent risks and hazards that are unavoidable, including, but not limited to, the risk of serious bodily injury, permanent disability, paralysis and death. These risks include:
(n) Performing demanding and tiring physical techniques;
(o) Intense physical exertion, intense cardiovascular training sessions and rapid movements;
(p) Exercise and stretch for various muscle groups;
(q) Misuse of equipment or mechanical failure of equipment;
(r) Spinal cord injuries that may result in permanent paralysis of the participant;
(s) Serious injury to almost all of the participant's bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons and other parts of the body or to the participant's overall health and well-being;
(t) Abrasions, sprains, strains, fractures or dislocations;
(u) Concussions or other head injuries, including but not limited to closed head injuries or blunt head injuries;
(v) Physical contact with other participants, spectators, equipment and possible hazards;
(w) Contact with a racket, steering wheel, net or field;
(x) Not wear appropriate safety or protective equipment;
(y) Failure to act safely or within the capabilities of the participant or in designated areas;
(z) Travel to and from tournaments and related non-competitive events that are an integral part of activities 3. The organization may offer or promote online programs (such as webinars, remote conferences, workshops, and online training) that present predictable and unpredictable risks that are different from those of in-person programs. These risks include privacy breaches, hacking, technological failures or damage.

activities.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
6. In consideration of the organization allowing the Participant to take part in the Activities, the Participant agrees:
(k) That the Participant shall not rely on any oral or written statement made by the Organization or its agents, whether in a brochure or advertisement or in individual conversations, to agree to participate in the Activities;
l) That when the participant trains or practices in his/her own space, the participant (or the participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) is responsible for the participant's environment and the location and equipment that is selected for the participant;
m) That the participant's mental and physical state is appropriate to participate in the activities and that the participant (or the participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) assumes all risks related to the participant's mental and physical state;
n) Comply with the rules of participation in activities;
o) Respect the rules of the installation or equipment;
(p) That if the participant observes an unusual significant danger or risk, he withdraws from participation and immediately makes his observations to a representative of the organization;
q) The risks associated with the activities are increased when the participant is weakened and will not participate if he or she is weakened in any way;
r) That it is the sole responsibility of the participant (or the participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) to assess whether certain activities are too difficult for the participant. By starting an activity, the participant (or the participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) acknowledges and agrees to the relevance and conditions of the activity;
s) That COVID-19 is contagious in nature and that the participant may be exposed to or infected with COVID-19 and that such exposure may result in injury, illness, permanent disability or death;
t) That the participant (or the participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) is responsible for the selection of the participant's safety or protective equipment and the secure attachment of such equipment.

WARNING

When the participant is of legal age or older, the participant assumes all risks arising from his participation in the activities, associated with or related to them, and waives any claim that he may have, now or in the future, against the organization. The Participant, when of legal age, fully accepts and assumes all risks and possibility of injury, death, property damage, expenses and related losses, including loss of income, resulting from participation in the activities.
8. Where the Entrant is of legal age or older, the Entrant shall forever release and indemnify the Organization from any and all claims, demands, actions, damages (including direct, indirect, special and/or consequential), losses, actions, judgments and costs (including legal fees) (collectively, the "Claims") that the Entrant has or may have in the future, that may arise from or result from participation in or in relation to the activities, even though such claims may have been caused in any way, including, but not limited to, by the negligence of the organization, gross negligence, negligent rescue, omissions, recklessness, breach of contract and/or breach of a legal duty of care of the organization.
9. The organization is not responsible for any damage to the participant's vehicle, property or equipment that may occur as a result of the activities. This Agreement is designed to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by law of the Province of Ontario and if any part of this Agreement is found to be invalid, the remainder will, notwithstanding, continue to be in full force and effect from its legal effect. The Participant (or the Participant's parent/guardian, as applicable) agrees to bring any legal action against the Organization in the Province of Alberta and further agrees that the substantive law of the Province of Alberta applies with respect to conflict of laws rules.

STATUS OF ACTIVITIES The Participant is voluntarily participating in the sport of badminton and the spectating, orientation, instruction, activities, competitions, programs, and services (collectively the "Activities") of the Club, the Member, and/or Badminton Alberta ("collectively the Organization").

The Participant (and the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) agrees that the Organization has the discretion to cancel any scheduled Activities. The Organization has no responsibilities to the Participant (including refunding registration fees or paying for any costs associated with travel) if an Activity is canceled or postponed by the Organization or for any other reason including a public health or safety issue.

The Participant (and the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) agrees that the Organization has the discretion to modify the structure of any Activities due to a public health or safety issue, which may include removing specific disciplines or age groups from a competition, changing a competition format, or changing the manner in which individuals become eligible to participate.

The Participant (and the Participant's parent/guardian, if applicable) agrees that the Organization may implement and enforce guidelines for participation that may include 'Return to Play' protocols or the wearing of personal protective equipment by Participants (and their parents/guardians, if applicable). The Organization has the discretion to remove any Participant (and their parents/guardians, if applicable) who does not comply with the Return to Play protocols or wear personal protective equipment. When required, the Participant is responsible for providing his or her own personal protective equipment.

STATUS of Activities The incumbent voluntarily participates in the sport of badminton and the performance, orientation, instruction, activities, competitions, programs and services (collectively the "Activities") of the club, member and/or Badminton Alberta (collectively the "Organization").

The Registrant (and the Licensee's parent/guardian, if applicable) agrees that the Organization has the discretion to cancel any planned activity. The organization has no liability to the registrant (including reimbursement of registration fees or payment of costs associated with travel) if an activity is cancelled or postponed by the organization or for any other reason, including a public health or safety concern.

The Licensee (and the Licensee's parent/guardian, if applicable) agrees that the Organization has the discretion to change the structure of any activity due to a public health or safety issue, which may include removing specific disciplines or age groups from a competition, changing the format of a competition, or changing the manner in which individuals become eligible to participate.

The Registrant (and the Licensee's parent/guardian, if applicable) agrees that the Organization may implement and enforce entry guidelines that may include "Return to Play" protocols or the wearing of personal protective equipment by The Holders (and their parents/guardians, if applicable). The organization has the discretion to remove any registrant (and their parents/guardians, if applicable) who does not comply with re-play protocols or does not wear personal protective equipment. If necessary, the holder is required to provide his or her own personal protective equipment.
