Sport is for everyone, which is why Alberta’s government is working to make sport safe, fair and accessible for all Albertans. The Fairness and Safety in Sport Act and accompanying regulation are key to this work.
The Fairness and Safety in Sport Act and regulation establish a balanced approach to protect the integrity of female athletic competitions by ensuring women and girls have the opportunity to compete in biological female-only divisions, while also ensuring transgender athletes are able to meaningfully participate in the sports of their choice.
“When Albertans participate in the sports they love, they should be able to do so on a level playing field. No athlete should have an unfair advantage, and no athlete should have to put themselves at risk of harm to participate. The Fairness and Safety in Sport Act and regulation are critical to making this vision a reality in our province.”
Andrew Boitchenko, Minister of Tourism and Sport
In-scope organizations will be required to create and implement policies for athlete eligibility that align with the regulation, including limiting eligibility for female-only divisions to biologically female athletes. The act also supports the expansion and creation of co-ed divisions, where numbers warrant. In-scope organizations include provincial sport organizations, post-secondary institutions and independent academic institutions subject to the Post-secondary Learning Act, as well as school authorities subject to the Education Act.
Alberta’s government will continue to work closely with in-scope organizations as they create eligibility policies that help ensure a fair, safe sport system in Alberta. The Fairness and Safety in Sport Act and accompanying regulation come into effect Sept. 1, 2025.
